Known by the call sign TA2J (Ex.TA2FM), Şerif Fazıl Türkan was a valued operator who left significant marks in the early years of amateur radio in Turkey. Especially during his youth in Ankara, he worked actively and continued amateur radio activities with great passion despite the limited means of the period.

Around 1970, he operated with a handmade CW transmitter built with his own means, and used a Heathkit HR10B as the receiver.

Fazıl Türkan (SK) is one of the names remembered with respect in the amateur radio community today. His effort, determination, and passion continue to inspire new generations of amateurs.

? The information and image included in this content were taken from the valuable archive of TA1D Kadri Bey.

The QSL card related to the work he carried out in the 1960s–70s with the call sign TA2FM has been added to our museum. Below, you can examine the scanned blank sample of the card. We thank TA1HZ Dr. Tevfik Aydın Kazancıoğlu for the QSL cards featured on the page.

Images of a QSL card received during the period when he was on the air with the call sign TA2FM (1979) have been added. When we examine the note section, we see that EA1XC Station made a QSO with TA for the first time and requested a QSL card.

In 1987, F6FNU Antoine Baldeck(SK) wrote a 2-page letter to Fazıl Bey. He began by thanking him for their QSO, then offered to be his QSL manager, and in the following years he undertook his management.

An image of a QSL card from the period when F6FNU Antoine was his QSL manager has been shared. Year: 1989 (Via:F6FNU)

You can see F6FNU Antoine’s QSL card below. On the back of the card he sent, he stated that he conveyed his good wishes to TA2J Fazıl Bey in his new job, that he had returned from vacation, and that he thanked him for the QSL card. F6FNU Antoine passed away in August 2010.

Photographs of TA2J Fazıl Bey taken at the station are shared below.

Ş. Fazıl Türkan also, in order to make his knowledge permanent, “Amateur Radio Technical and Operating Handbook” prepared a work titled. However, unfortunately, he did not live long enough to complete and publish this valuable work. The book was prepared for publication by TA1HZ Dr. Tevfik Aydın Kazancıoğlu and published with the support of the Turkish Education Foundation.

The proceeds from the sale of the book are transferred to the Şerif Fazıl Türkan Scholarship Fund. Within the scope of this fund, scholarships are awarded to those selected from among students studying in the field of electrical-electronics engineering who apply. By a fitting decision of TA1HZ, the following was also added to the scholarship conditions: “when all other conditions are equal, priority is given to the student who is a radio amateur .”

During the 2008–2009 academic year, 4 students benefited from this scholarship.
